100% slave free the norm in chocolate

Things aren’t being shared evenly in the chocolate supply chain. The chain starts with millions of farmers who produce cocoa and ends with the billions of consumers who enjoy chocolate. But what about the bit in between? This section is dominated by a handful of chocolate giants that profits from keeping the cocoa purchasing price as low as possible. As a result, farmers are forced to live in poverty.. leading to child labor and slavery.

Right now there is slavery on cocoa farms in West Africa. This is a result of the unequally divided cocoa chain. Tony’s Chocolonely exists to change that. Illegal child labor and modern slavery are against the law – it needs to stop.

Modern slavery, illegal child labor and extreme poverty seem to be the symptoms of an underlying complex issue: the economic model of the cocoa industry is driven by maximum profit. The relationship between producer, purchaser and end user is anything but equal. This non-transparent way of doing business makes it awfully easy to avoid to take responsibility for the abuses at the start of the chain. As a result, people simply accept inequality and extreme poverty and nothing changes.

Over the last few years we’ve been working on Tony’s Chocolonely’s Sourcing Principles for slave-free cocoa. At this point we are confident that it enables cocoa farmers to earn a living income. And that will put an end to modern slavery and illegal child labor on cocoa farms in West Africa.

Dutch journalist, Teun van de Keuken, is shocked when he reads a book about illegal child labor and modern slavery on cocoa farms in West Africa. Slavery still exists. He decides to start an investigation with his television program ‘Keuringsdienst van Waarde’.

Tony’s starts the project with financial support from Oxfam Novib. Tony’s examines the supply chain, researches possible options for improving it, travels to cocoa farms in Africa and engages in dialogues with the farmers and cooperatives. Based on the results Tony’s decides, for the time being, to purchase Fairtrade cocoa according to the Mass Balance principle.

We start paying cocoa farmers 25% more than the standard price they receive for their cocoa. This is based on the findings of a study by True Price, which calculated the amount cocoa farmers needed to be paid in order to receive a living income.

In 2014, the first Tony’s bars are sold in Finland and Belgium.

Not just a classic milk chocolate bar, but our classic chocolate bar. It was the first bar we ever made, back in 2005. We gave it a screaming red wrapper to attract attention to our main mission – 100% slave-free chocolate.

This flavor is a perfect combo of 32% Fairtrade milk chocolate and a minimum of 10% hazelnuts. Did you know that we hid a map of Western Africa in our unequally divided bar? We couldn’t fit whole hazelnuts into the pieces that represent Togo and Benin! After a very heated debate, we completely and politically incorrectly combined two separate countries into one bigger piece so we could use whole hazelnuts.

This bar contains at least 70% cacao. Se-ven-ty! This means we use a lot of cocoa beans. This dark chocolate delicacy is designed for the true chocolate lover.

We like to do things differently and this bar is no exception. We took our classic milk chocolate and added crunchy caramel (yea, you heard right) and flakes of sea salt. Sweet and salty never tasted soooo good. Well, at least that’s what our chocofans think. It’s our best seller worldwide!

What’s everyone buzzing about? It’s our newest classic flavor, milk chocolate honey almond nougat. Creamy milk chocolate with bits of sticky, sweet nougat made from honey and almonds. We put it in bright yellow wrapping and voila.. we have ourselves a full rainbow! We’re kind of nuts like that. Nougat the joke?
